Introduction to Edwardians Online

Edwardians Online is a project aiming to improve access to archived, qualitative data. The main outcome of this project is an online resource that provides content-based access to a collection of oral history interviews with people who lived in Edwardian Britain.

The interviews were undertaken in the early 1970s as part of Professor Paul Thompson's study of Edwardian society, and form the basis for Thompson's, The Edwardians, The Remaking of British Society, (1975, 1992). The 444 interviews were originally recorded on audio tapes and later transcribed as typed, paper documents.

Phase I of this project, which has been to create a digital multimedia resource that integrates a wealth of existing primary and secondary materials, is now complete and the following features are now available online for initial evaluation:

The original study materials were initially archived, catalogued and disseminated by Qualidata. The paper/microfiche transcripts are held at the National Social Policy and Social Change Archive at the University of Essex and the original sound recordings deposited at the British Library National Sound Archive. Qualidata, as part of its ongoing initiative to promote the re-use of qualitative data, has developed this digital resource in conjunction with the UK Data Archive.
